    THE VALUE OF READING

We want to thank everyone who came out to support the Morasha School Book Fair last week at Barnes and Noble. We want to thank Kathleen Canter for coordinating the event and thank all of the teachers that came to read to our kids. Hopefully you were able to get some great books for your family and we know many of you bought books for the classrooms. Thank you for your generosity.

No matter what your politics are, isn't it great that we will have a President that is a passionate reader?  We even know some of the books that are on his night stand. One book is Doris Kearn Goodwin's Team Of Rivals.

Our Staff loves to read. Many are in book clubs. I often find myself asking people around here about what they are reading and what they recommend to read. I just finished Rabbi Artson's The Everyday Torah (weekly Torah portion) and am currently reading Joyce Carol Oats The Grave Diggers Daughter (heavy fiction) and Jim Pattersons' The Influencers, The Power To Change Anything.  I highly recommend all three. There is absolutely nothing like a great book to fall into.

At Morasha, in addition to teaching the students the skills and mechanics of reading we also strive to instill a passion for reading as well. As I visit in the classes I never fail to see various activities occurring that revolve around the pleasure of reading from the upper grades lounging in their beach chairs reading or the lower grades being read a wonderful story by their teachers. The joys of reading are all around us.

We count on your to partnership with us in striving to instill a love of reading in our children. One of the best ways to do that is to continue to read a loud to your children. Even if they are reading on their own pick a book (with their input) to read to them, no one ever outgrows hearing a good story. Additionally, it is important for them to see you reading books, magazines and/or the newspaper.

As the holiday vacation is upon us, my gift to you is to encourage you to pick a book to read a loud with your kids and pick a book to fall into yourself! You will thank me.

    B'shalom,

    HANUKKAH ACTIVITIES

    HANUKKAH ACTIVITIES

This year, Morasha students will be celebrating Hanukkah together with stories and crafts.  Next Friday, December 19th, festivities begin at 9:00.  Our older students will be pairing up with their "buddies" in the younger grades, pre-school-second, to read Hanukkah stories and do a craft project together.

After recess at 10:30, the Kindergarten - 6th graders will be doing more crafts together.  We will all gather in the MPR at 12:00 for a Hanukah assembly including a candle lighting presentation and Hanukkah songs.  All of the students will be treated to "soufganiyot" (donuts) as a Hanukkah treat during lunch time.

From 1:15-2:15 the classes will have their own Hanukkah parties.  At 2:15 we will gather in the MPR again for Kabbalat Shabbat.  4th grade will be performing a play and Kindergarten will be sharing a song they have learned.

All are invited to join us for our special Hanukkah assembly and Kabbalat Shabbat!

    PARSHAH HASHAVUAH

    American Flag
Haftarah Hosea (11:7-12:2) is paired with parashah Vayishlach (Genesis 32:4-36:43)

According to Hosea, God will call the exiled Israelites from exile to their Land (verses 11:10-11).  In parashah Vayishlach, Jacob returns to the Land of Israel from Haran where he had lived with Laban after running away from his offended brother (Genesis 32:10).  Jacob is returning because God told him to return.

Discuss these ideas with your family:

How is exile or banishment a punishment?  Was Jacob banished?  Why or why not?

When a child is punished by being sent to his/her room, from what is the child being banished?

Why must the person banished wait for permission to return?  What is the lesson learned?

    Shabbat Shalom!

    YEARBOOK

    WE NEED YOUR PHOTOS!
Did you take photos during the holidays?  Did you take photos on field trips?  What about sports or classroom events?  Have you sent copies to the school?

If you have not already done so, please email them to info@morasha.org or put them on a disk and bring them to the office.  We would like as many photos as possible to choose from when we do the collage pages.  Our committee would like to start compiling the photos and begin assembling these collage pages.  Please help us make this year's yearbook the best ever!!

If your have any questions or would like to help us, please contact Paula Bosza at pbosza@morasha.org.
