    CAMP SURF

    We're Here

The third and fourth grade had an absolute blast at Camp Surf last week. Camp Surf is an overnight environmental camp located on Imperial Beach in San Diego. We arrived on Wednesday afternoon, where we had a brief orientation, followed by some "getting-to-know-you" group games. Right before dinner, we went down to the very intimidating rock-climbing tower. Only a few brave souls were able to scale the wall and make it to the top, where they had a great view of downtown San Diego, the Pacific, and Mexico. After dinner and volleyball, we went down to the campfire and roasted marshmallows and made s'mores. After a very long day, we retired to our cabins for a good night's sleep.
     Tower Climb
On day two, we made our way down to the archery range to learn how to shoot a bow and arrow. I was very impressed with the marksmanship displayed by my students. We then made our way to an empty stretch of beach where only a few sticks and boards lay. Our job was to create a shelter with only the materials we found on the beach, and it had to be large enough to hold all fourteen students. Everyone had to work together and demonstrate that they could work as a team. Needless to say, they accomplished their goal!

    Water Fun

We then returned to our cabins to change into bathing suits so we could play in the ocean. I figured that once they made it to the edge of the water and dipped their toes in the frigid waters, that they would run back to the warm sand.  Boy was I wrong! Every single one of them flew into the water and splashed and played. Yikes! After we had our beach fun, we returned to our cabins to change and get ready for dinner. After dinner we returned to the beach to explore the nearby jetty.  We explored all the crevasses, looking for mussels, crabs and other creatures that have adapted to their environment. We then went back to the campfire and performed skits for the counselors.

    Habitat Studies

We awoke the next morning and met with the counselors to explore various habitats around the camp. We then finished our Camp Surf experience by studying the kelp that washed up on the beach. We then loaded up and headed back to school. Everyone is already looking forward to a return trip!

There is so much to see.  More photos will be added on Thursday.

    GRADE 1 FIELD TRIP

    CALIFORNIA PIZZA KITCHEN

    Creating Their Own Pizza
The First Grade Pizza Makers made yummy pizzas during our trip to California Pizza Kitchen.  We have been studying health and nutrition so our trip today taught us about how important healthy eating can be, even when you go to a restaurant.  We saw how clean a restaurant needs to be and how important it is to have clean hands when preparing food.

We saw the giant oven that cooks pizza at 450 degrees, we saw the pantry where they keep all the food that they use up in one day.  We went into the refrigerator to see how much milk, cheese, and meats they use in one day.  We discovered how soundproof the fridge is, we screamed as loud as we could and NOBODY could hear us!

When our tour was over we got to make individual pizzas and eat them.  We all agreed that pizza tastes so much better when we get to make it ourselves.  Our tour guide, Anthony, told us to come back to visit and try his favorite pizza.  His favorite is a breakfast pizza; crust, eggs, cheese, avocado, olives, and salsa.

    PROJECT ADVENTURE

    PROJECT ADVENTURE
    OUR PHYS. ED. PROGRAM

Our PE teacher, Coach Marianne Barth, has been attending Project Adventure workshops, which is the core of our Physical Education Curriculum.  She is very excited about all the new games she has learned and will be teaching to and playing with your children.  In order to do this, she is in need of some items and is asking for your help.

If you have USED AND UNWANTED yoga mats and beanie babies, she will use them with the kids.  She is looking for about 10 used yoga mats that can be cut into circles to be used in the games.  The beanie babies will be the game pieces.  The kids love variety so any beanie babies you no longer want will be greatly appreciated.

    PARSHAH HASHAVUAH

    Torah Scroll
This week's Torah portion, Tzav (Leviticus 6:1-88:36), is paired with the Haftarah from Jeremiah (7:21-8:3, 9:22-23)

In the Haftarah (v. 7:24 and 7:26), Jeremiah says that the Israelites did not give ear.

What does it mean to "give ear"?

In Leviticus (8:23-24), Moses consecrates Aaron and his sons by dabbing their blood from a consecration offering on their right ears, right thumbs, and big toe of their right feet.  Why were these parts of the body chosen for anointing?  Some say they represent the whole priest being anointed from head (ear) to toe.  Others suggest that the ear indicates the priest is prepare to listen to God's commands, the thumb (hand) indicates the priest is ready to perform God's tasks, and the toe (foot) indicates that the priest will walk in God's holy ways.

Which interpretation of the Leviticus anointing scene do you prefer?  Can you argue that both interpretations make sense?

List mitzvoth we are expected to keep, then identify a part of the body that is associated with each example:
Torah reading is associated with our ears.
Keeping kosher is associated with our mouths.
Visiting the sick is associated with our feet.
Tefillin is associated with our head and arm.

With your families, see if you can come up with other ideas about mitzvoth and our senses!

    L'Shalom,

    THIS WEEK'S VALUE
    KLAL YISRAEL
     KLAL YISRAEL
    The People of Israel

Klal Yisrael - The People of IsraelOur icon of Klal Yisrael shows the connection between the Yad, Israel, and the world, and is like the connection between one compartment of the ship, and the entire ship.

    T
he Yad is a symbol of Torah, which connects the Jews of Israel to the Jews of the Diaspora.

    I
srael is on our icon to show the connection between the Jews in Israel, and the Jews in the rest of the world by laying it over the world.  Jews are united in their connection to Israel.

    T
he value of Klal Yisrael is important, because it connects Jews all around the world to each other. When we perform Jewish rituals and celebrate Jewish holidays together, we demonstrate the value of Klal Yisrael.

Although Jews are dispersed across the miles, we must remember that we are part of the worldwide Jewish community.
