Our special guest, Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz came to talk about when he took surfboards to Irsael.  Looks like he can still catch the waves!

There was lots of music, dancing and Israeli foods for everyone to enjoy!  Thank you Mrs. Elbaz and Mrs. Barkol. We loved it all.

    PARSHAH HASHAVUAH

    Torah Scroll
This week's Parshah, Kedoshim (Leviticus 19:1-20:27) is paired with Amos (9:7-15).

In Leviticus 19:18, we read an important rule of just behavior, "Love your neighbor as yourself."  How does this rule help us to behave in a just manner?

Amos is called the Prophet of Justice.  What is justice?  In his book, Amos vs. Amaziah (p. 56), Shalom Spiegel explains, "Justice is midway between morality and reason, virtue and intelligence, love and logic.  We speak rightly of scales of justice, the image suggesting a precision instrument of intact and incorruptible weights, pondering carefully contended claims."  What do you think Speigel means?  How does this understanding help us behave?

The concept of holiness is closely tied with the concept of justice.  As a holy nation, we behave in a just way towards our fellow human beings.  We are commanded to be holy in this Parshah and we are obligated and commanded to act justly in the world in our business and our personal lives.  The words of Amos ring loudly for us today:

    Seek good and not evil,
    That you may live,
And that the Lord, the God of Hosts, May truly be with you,
    As you think.
    Hate evil and love good,
And establish justice in the gate... (Amos 5:14-15)

Tikkun Olam - Repair The WorldPLEASE SUPPORT OUR THIRD GRADE CLASS!
Every Friday we will be collecting bottles and cans (ONLY THOSE THAT HAVE THE CA CRV LABEL)  that you bring from home.  Our third graders will greet you at the gate and collect your recyclables.  No glass please!  We can only recycle aluminum and plastic.  We need to fill our huge bin by the end of the school year.  Thank you for supporting the Third Grade class' tikkun olam project!
    GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK
    RECYCLE RESPONSIBLY

Make sure no garbage is put into recycle bins.  Recyleable materials tainted with garbage ends up in the landfill.
